Help when a global fuel crisis hits home

Heating and eating costs may be going up – but so, too, is the level of support for those of us who need it.

Here is a quick rundown of help that is available, as we all face the challenge of rising fuel and food bills.

1 Power companies

Our first port of call should be our energy provider. Are you on the right tariff? Check your energy bills. Do you need additional help? Suppliers can arrange affordable payments, such as payment breaks or reduced rates. Power companies also have charitable funds to help. If bills are still too high, are you with the right supplier? You can switch.

2 Local councils

Find out how to get help through the Crisis Resilience Fund from your local council. This fund provides grants to local authorities in England to assist people when faced with a financial crisis. Check with your local authority. You can find out who they are through the Government portal.

3 Citizens Advice

Check if you can claim benefits or increase your current benefits. The Citizens Advice website can help you check that, sort out problems with benefits, show you how to claim Universal Credit, explore Income Support, see what benefits to claim if you’re sick or disabled – and much more.

4 Age UK

Many local Age UKs across England and Wales offer home energy checks. They can fit equipment to assist energy efficiency and offer practical tips to keep your fuel bill down. Handyperson services, help with shopping, home help and computer classes are among a wide range of assistance on the Age UK website.

5 Money Saving Expert

Money-saving guru Martin Lewis offers guidance on a whole range of financial issues. The Cheap Energy Club helps those on dual-fuel and single-fuel standard variable and fixed tariffs. You can use it to find the cheapest tariff for you. Their website says many households can save £100s by switching.

6 MMHS support

MMHS continue to install highly efficient boilers and keep them in top condition. But if you are concerned about your heating, let us know. If you are struggling with the current cost of living crisis, please talk to us. We can consider further assistance via the Wellbeing Fund or direct you to another source. Phone 020 3848 6020
